Gaushala
A Gaushala (Cow Farm) to serve and protect the Indian breed was one of the earliest establishments at the Geeta Dham. It was Gurudev’s mission to set it up on modern scientific lines so as to develop it as a model of sustainability for the small, marginal farmers in the neighborhood. In 2016, a technical collaboration was signed with BAIF Development Research Foundation ( baif.org.in) committed to provide sustainable livelihood to rural poor through promotion of livestock development. A THARPARKAR AI (Artificial Insemination) breeding centre laboratory was established and mission undertaken to develop the herd with best quality THARPARKAR Bulls semen from BAIF Central Research Station at Pune. Various specialists and veterinarians make quarterly visits to Geeta Dham to monitor and assist in the implementation of this 7-year program. Concurrently, Fodder and food cultivation development plans have also been implemented so that cost-effective plantation of Green Fodder is provided for the cows.
We have almost 500 cows, a majority of them of the non-milking gender. All animals are cared for till their life span by a dedicated team of 16 Gopalans, including a technically qualified livestock assistant. Segregated living spaces are provided for each category and a carefully calibrated diet is designed for each of the category of milking and non -milking herd. Special attention is paid to problem cases through specific interventions- and in many instances, we have seen revival of animals with sluggish growth and complicated pregnancies. Milk production & productivity parameters are monitored to keep a check on management factors. Gopalans are continuously motivated to unlearn old practices that need to be superseded with scientific ones. This is an on-going development process.
Majority of the milk production is used for feeding to the hostel students and staff children. Whatever is spare, is picked up by donors who have milk sales ventures. There are also downstream activities to process the Gobar (Cow dung) into Vermi Compost and Fuel Gas used for cooking for the Students Mess. Plans are afoot with BAIF, to produce an upgraded form of compost – BIO PROM as also use the extra bio gas for electricity back up generation. Discussions are also on with manufacturers of products using distilled cow urine, including the setting up of a Urine distillation plant. It is our endeavor to continuously increase revenues from Milk, Vermi Compost, Gobar-Urine Manure, Distilled Urine by tying up with marketing agencies.
The funding for expenses to operate the Gaushala services is entirely through voluntary donations. A majority of the expenditure is for Fodder and Food. There are also occasional capital expenses to expand the facilities as the numbers keep going up.
Hence, DONATIONS are welcome in several forms:
Adopt a Cow
-
- To start with, we will put up for adoption Adult female calves in the age group 2-3 years. This is the most critical phase in the development of Milch Cows.
-
- We provide a separate shelter for their care and nourishment needs.
-
- We will assign a name to each adopted one and identify it suitably.
-
- A devotee can adopt one or more of them.
-
- Adoption would mean that the devotee’s donation would be used to defray the cost of upkeep, including food & fodder & vet treatment.
-
- Since costs are substantial, we may need to accredit an “Adopted Cow” to several devotees.
-
- The minimum Donation for adoption of 1 calf, for 1 year, shall be Rs 10,000/ USD 200.
-
- Donations can be made to the designated bank accounts, specifying the donation is for “Adopt a Cow” scheme.
